How to scan a document with your phone
Set up the page
Put the document on a flat, plain surface that contrasts with the paper (a dark table works well for white pages). Use soft, even light and keep your shadow off the page.
Open the scanner
In Doc Scanner, tap the camera button in the middle of the bottom bar (the camera opens in Document mode), or open Tools and tap Document. Tap the shutter to start.
Let it capture
Hold the phone parallel to the page. Smart edge detection outlines the document, straightens the perspective and captures it automatically. Keep going for more pages, up to 100 per scan, then finish the scan.
Clean it up
Tap Crop to adjust the corner handles or rotate, and Edit to pick a filter: Magic Color, Grayscale, B&W, Lighten or Contrast. Apply to all pages sets the same look on every page.
Share or save the PDF
Tap the share icon at the top. Choose PDF or JPG, the quality and page size, and which pages to include, then tap Share to send it with any app on your phone, or Print.
Scan with your phone in 4 steps
Phone scanning works the same way on every phone and in every scanner app: prepare the page, capture it, clean it up, export it. The camera does the work a flatbed used to do, and the scanner software does the rest. It finds the four corners of the paper, flattens a page you photographed at an angle into a straight rectangle, and boosts the contrast so text looks printed rather than photographed.
The difference between a scan and an ordinary photo is exactly that cleanup. A photo keeps the table, the shadow of your hand and the slant of the page; a scan crops to the paper, squares it up and saves it as a PDF that any office, school or bank can open.
With Doc Scanner the four steps take a few taps: open the camera, let auto-capture grab each page, pick a filter, and share. If your paperwork has several pages, the same scan keeps going, and you get one PDF instead of a pile of photos. See how to scan multiple pages into one PDF for long documents.
Tips for a sharp scan
Most bad phone scans come down to light, angle and background. Get those right and the result looks like it came out of an office scanner.
- Flat surface, contrasting background. White paper on a dark desk gives edge detection a clear outline. Avoid patterned tablecloths and white-on-white.
- Even light, no shadows. Daylight from a window or a ceiling light works. Hold the phone so your own shadow doesn't fall across the page; switch on the flash only if the room is dark.
- Phone parallel to the paper. Perspective correction fixes a tilt, but the closer you are to straight above the page, the sharper the far edge will be.
- Fill the frame. Let the document take up most of the screen, with a little background showing on every side so the edges can be found.
- Flatten folds and curls. Press creased letters flat, and remove staples and sticky notes before you scan.
- Watch for glare on laminated cards. Tilt the card slightly or move away from direct light so the reflection doesn't cover a number. For IDs, scan both sides; Doc Scanner's ID card mode puts front and back on one page (Premium).
- Pick the right filter. Magic Color for colourful forms and receipts, Grayscale or B&W for text-heavy pages that you'll print or e-mail, Lighten for pages shot in dim light, Contrast for faint print.
- Zoom in before you send. Small print, signatures and ID numbers should be readable at full size.
Do you need an app?
Not always. Both major phone platforms ship a free scanner, and for a single page they do a good job.
Built into iPhone
Apple's Notes app scans from inside a note: tap the attachments button, then Scan Documents. It captures automatically when it detects the page boundaries, and saves the result as a PDF in the note. The Files app has Scan Documents under its More button, and since iOS 26 the Preview app on iPhone can scan too.
Built into Android
Google Drive has a scanner behind its camera button that saves PDF or JPG files to your Google Drive. Files by Google has a Scan button that saves PDFs on the phone, and Pixel phones show a Scan document prompt in the Camera app.
When a scanner app is worth it
So, is there an app to scan documents? Yes, plenty, and a dedicated one earns its place when your paperwork gets more serious than one page. Doc Scanner adds:
- Both sides of an ID card on one page (Premium), the layout most offices ask for.
- The same app on iPhone and Android, with the same buttons and the same export options on both.
- Export control in one screen: PDF or JPG, Low, Medium or High quality, Original, A4 or Letter page size, and only the pages you choose.
- Word and TXT files from your scans (Premium).
- Password-protected PDFs with AES-256 encryption (Premium).
Built-in scanners are a fine starting point. Doc Scanner is the upgrade for people who scan IDs, contracts, tax papers and school forms every week.
iPhone and Android specifics
On iPhone (iOS 15.5 or later), Doc Scanner adds your documents to Spotlight search, so typing a word from a scanned page into the iPhone search bar can bring up the document. You can also import photos from your library in one go, or bring a PDF in with "Open in" from another app. Step-by-step: how to scan documents on iPhone.
On Android (Android 7.0 or later), automatic edge detection uses the document scanner in Google Play services, so capture feels familiar if you've used Google's own scanner. Images and PDFs can be sent to Doc Scanner with "Share to" or "Open with" from your gallery or file manager. Step-by-step: how to scan documents on Android.
On both phones the rest is identical: the same six filters, the same Crop, Sign and Highlight tools, folders, merging, and the same Share screen.
Phone app vs a document scanner
Is a phone scan as good as a real scanner? For everyday paperwork, yes in practice: forms, letters, receipts, contracts, IDs and homework come out flat, cropped and readable, and they're accepted as PDFs by employers, landlords, schools and most online forms.
A flatbed or sheet-fed scanner still has the edge in a few cases: archiving old photographs, very large originals, and jobs where you need the maximum possible resolution. If that's your task, use a hardware scanner.
For everything else, the phone wins on convenience. It's always in your pocket, it handles a single page or a stack, and the file is ready to send the moment you finish. Doc Scanner also gives every exported PDF an invisible text layer, so you can search the PDF for a word or copy a line from it, which a plain image scan from an older scanner often can't do. Send, upload or print the PDF
Once the scan looks right, tap the share icon. The Share screen lets you pick the format, the quality and the pages, and then hands the file to your phone's share sheet. From there it goes to Mail, Gmail, Outlook, WhatsApp, Messages, the Files app or any cloud drive app you have installed.
- E-mail: Medium quality keeps attachments light while staying readable. Full walkthrough: how to scan and email a document.
- Upload to a website or portal: save the PDF to your phone's files first, then pick it in the upload form.
- Print: tap Print on the Share screen, or Print in the document's ⋯ menu.
- Keep it: documents stay in Doc Scanner, sorted into folders and searchable by their recognised text.
Need to sign before sending? Doc Scanner's signatures are free: draw once, then place and resize your saved signature on any page.

Frequently asked questions
Can I scan without a scanner?
Yes. Your phone's camera plus a scanner app replaces a scanner for everyday documents. Doc Scanner finds the page edges, straightens the perspective and saves a clean PDF on iPhone or Android.
Is there an app to scan documents?
Yes. iPhones can scan in Notes and Files, and Android phones can scan in Google Drive or Files by Google. Doc Scanner by Ginowl is a dedicated scanner app for both platforms that adds ID cards on one page (Premium), export settings for quality, page size and pages, and searchable PDFs, with no ads and no watermarks.
Do I need an app to scan with my phone?
Not for a quick single page, because the built-in scanners in Notes, Files, Google Drive and Files by Google can do it. A scanner app helps when you scan often, need both sides of an ID on one page, want control over file size, or want the same tool on iPhone and Android.
Is a phone scan as good as a scanner?
For forms, letters, receipts, contracts and IDs, a phone scan with edge detection and a filter is clean and readable, and it's accepted as a PDF almost everywhere. For archiving photos or very large originals, a flatbed scanner is still the better tool.
Can I scan documents with my phone for free?
Yes. Doc Scanner is free to download and has a free plan for scanning, signing and exporting PDFs. Premium unlocks text extraction, ID card mode, password-protected PDFs and more.
How do I make a phone scan look professional?
Scan on a flat, dark surface in even light, hold the phone parallel to the page, then use the Grayscale or B&W filter for text documents. Crop with the corner handles and export as a PDF.
