Disclosure: Doc Scanner is made by us (Ginowl), so we rank it first. Other apps are described only from their store listings, official sites and the sources listed on this page.
1. Doc Scanner: the CamScanner alternative without ads or watermarks
Doc Scanner is built for people who want CamScanner-style scanning without the clutter. Open the app, point the camera at a page, and smart edge detection finds the corners, straightens the perspective and captures the page for you. There's no account to create (one is set up automatically, and Apple or Google sign-in is optional). No ad stands between you and your PDF, and no stamp lands at the bottom of the page.
- No ads, anywhere. Not on the camera, not on export, not between documents.
- No watermarks. Your PDF looks exactly like your paper, on the free plan and on Premium.
- Searchable PDFs for free. Every exported PDF gets an invisible text layer, so you can search it and select text in any PDF reader.
- Free signatures. Draw your signature once, then reuse it, place it and resize it on any page.
- Many pages, one PDF. Batch mode scans up to 100 pages into one document with auto-capture. You can add, reorder and delete pages later.
- Text recognition on your phone. AI-powered OCR (Google ML Kit) works offline, and nothing is uploaded for recognition. Copying text with Extract Text and converting to Word or TXT are Premium.
- ID card front and back on one page (Premium), ready to print or upload.
- Export to PDF, JPG, TXT, Word (.docx) or PowerPoint (.pptx), print directly, and lock PDFs with a password and AES-256 encryption (Premium).
It runs on iPhone (iOS 15.5 or later) and Android (7.0 or later), with the interface in 21 languages and light and dark mode. Want the head-to-head version? Read CamScanner vs Doc Scanner.
Why people look for a CamScanner alternative
CamScanner is one of the biggest scanner apps in the world: Google Play shows 500M+ downloads and an Editors' Choice badge. It's capable. Still, the same few complaints keep sending people elsewhere.
- Ads. The App Store page says 'Contains Advertising' and Google Play shows a 'Contains ads' label. In September 2026, one App Store reviewer wrote that 'you can't skip the ad' and that the close button 'only opens up another ad'.
- The watermark. CamScanner's own 2022 blog says free scans carry a 'Scanned by CamScanner' watermark. The same post says US users on iOS and Android got a free 'remove watermark' tap at export. Text in CamScanner's website code still calls PDF watermark removal 'a paid function', so it may depend on where you are.
- Subscription surprises. Several 2026 Google Play and Trustpilot reviewers warn that the free trial turns into a yearly plan unless you cancel in time. CamScanner's own subscription FAQ points out that deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
- Where it's available. India blocked CamScanner in June 2020 together with 58 other apps, and press reports from December 2024 say the block is still in place.
If any of that sounds familiar, you don't have to give up a good scanner. You only need one that doesn't charge you attention for every page.
CamScanner without ads: what actually works
There are two ways to get rid of CamScanner's ads. The first is to pay: CamScanner's Premium comparison lists 'No ads or watermarks' as a paid benefit. Not every customer is happy with that route. One Google Play reviewer wrote in September 2026 that the app is 'almost insufferable with the ads' and that they had 'paid twice over the years to remove the ads'.
The second is to switch to a scanner that never had ads to begin with. Doc Scanner shows no ads on the free plan or on Premium. It doesn't stamp your pages either, so there's nothing to remove before you send a file to your landlord, bank or HR team. More apps that meet this bar are in our scanner app with no ads and scanner app with no watermark guides.
Other CamScanner alternatives worth knowing
Doc Scanner isn't the only option. Here is what the other popular choices do well, and where Doc Scanner is different.
Adobe Scan
Adobe Scan has a big brand behind it, an ID card mode and free online storage tied to an Adobe account. Adobe's guides and TechRadar's 2025 review say you sign in with an Adobe, Google, Facebook or Apple account before you scan. Adobe's guides also say every saved PDF goes to Adobe's online storage. On the free plan, text recognition runs only on shorter scans. Combining files, password protection and Office exports are Premium. Doc Scanner needs no sign-up, merges documents on the free plan, has saved signatures built in (Adobe sends you to Acrobat Reader to fill and sign) and runs on older phones. The current Adobe Scan needs iOS 18 or Android 10. More in Adobe Scan alternatives.
Genius Scan
Genius Scan, from The Grizzly Labs in Paris, has a strong free Basic plan with no third-party ads, no watermark and no account. Text recognition and searchable PDFs are part of its paid plans. Its help centre says the app doesn't support signing inside the app and points to the separate Genius Sign app on iOS. Doc Scanner gives you searchable PDFs and saved signatures on the free plan, exports to Word (Premium) and PowerPoint, and supports iOS 15.5. The current Genius Scan requires iOS 17 or later.
iScanner
iScanner, by BP Mobile, includes a PDF editor and e-signature in its free version and adds no watermark, according to its official Free vs Pro table. The same table says text recognition is not available in the free version, and that batch (multi-page) scanning is not available for free on iOS. The current version needs iOS 18 and Android 12. Doc Scanner scans many pages into one PDF on iPhone for free, makes every PDF searchable and runs on older phones.
The scanner already on your phone
On iPhone, Notes and Files can scan documents for free (Notes: Attachments > Scan Documents in iOS 26). On Android, Google Drive has a free scanner that saves searchable PDFs to your Google account. Both are great for a quick page. Doc Scanner adds things they don't document: an ID Card mode that puts both sides of a card on one page (Premium), PowerPoint export plus Word and TXT (Premium) on iPhone, and on Android reusable signatures and password-protected PDFs with AES-256 encryption (Premium). It is also the same app on iPhone and Android.

Switching from CamScanner: bring your files with you
There's no one-tap migration between scanner apps, but moving is quick. Export your documents from CamScanner as PDFs, then open them in Doc Scanner. On Android, use Share or Open with and pick Doc Scanner. On iPhone, use Open in, or go to Tools and tap Import PDF. Photos come in through Import from Photos, several at a time.
How to switch from CamScanner to Doc Scanner
- Install Doc Scanner. Get Doc Scanner from the App Store or Google Play and open it. There is no sign-up form, so you can start scanning straight away.
- Export your old scans. In CamScanner, share the documents you want to keep as PDF files and save them to your phone.
- Import them. In Doc Scanner, open Tools and tap Import PDF or Photos. On Android you can also use Share or Open with, and on iPhone Open in.
- Organise. Rename documents, move them into folders and use Merge to combine files into one PDF.
- Scan new paper cleanly. Use Document for single pages or Batch for many pages, pick a filter such as Magic Color, then tap Share to send a PDF or JPG with no watermark.
One honest tip: imported PDF pages come in as page images. Anything already printed on a page, including a watermark another app added, stays on it. For documents you still have on paper, rescan the original with Document or Batch mode and you'll get a clean, searchable PDF with nothing stamped on it.

Genius Scan's free Basic plan and the scanners built into iPhone Notes and Google Drive are also solid free options.

Yes. Doc Scanner shows no ads at all, on the free plan or on Premium. It does what you use CamScanner for: automatic edge detection, multi-page PDFs, filters, signatures and sharing.
Is there a CamScanner alternative without a watermark?
Yes. Doc Scanner never adds a watermark to your PDFs or JPGs. CamScanner's 2022 blog says its free scans carry a 'Scanned by CamScanner' watermark by default, with a free removal option for US users.
Can I move my CamScanner documents to Doc Scanner?
Yes. Export them from CamScanner as PDFs, then open them in Doc Scanner with Tools → Import PDF, Share or Open with on Android, or Open in on iPhone. Pages are imported as images, so a stamp already on a page stays. Rescan paper originals for a clean copy.
Is Doc Scanner free?
Doc Scanner is free to download and has a free plan for scanning, signing and exporting PDFs. Premium unlocks text extraction, ID card mode, password-protected PDFs and more.
