Can you use Adobe Scan without logging in?
Updated
Can you use Adobe Scan without login? According to Adobe's own user guides and TechRadar's 2025 review, no: you sign in with an Adobe, Google, Facebook or Apple account before you scan, and each PDF you save goes to Adobe cloud storage.
If you want a scanner with no sign-up, Doc Scanner by Ginowl for iPhone and Android is built for exactly that. Install it, open it and scan. Scanning, image processing and text recognition happen on your phone, and you decide where every PDF goes.
Doc Scanner by Ginowl — iPhone & Android · Free to download

Disclosure: Doc Scanner is made by us (Ginowl), so we rank it first. Other apps are described only from their store listings, official sites and the sources listed on this page.
How to scan a document without signing up
Install Doc Scanner
Download Doc Scanner from the App Store or Google Play and open it. There's no sign-up form.
Open the camera
Tap the camera button and pick Document for one page or Batch for several pages in one PDF.
Capture the page
Hold your phone over the page on a flat surface in good light. Doc Scanner finds the edges, corrects the perspective and captures it automatically.
Tidy it up
Crop with the corner handles, rotate if needed, and choose a filter such as Magic Color or B&W. Tap Sign to add your saved signature.
Share it your way
Tap Share, choose PDF or JPG, the quality and the page size, and send it with your phone's share sheet, or tap Print.
Does Adobe Scan require a login?
Every current source we checked says yes:
- TechRadar (July 2025): "You will need an Adobe ID though, which is free too, and you'll have to log in before you can use Adobe Scan."
- Adobe's user guides (iPhone and Android): the getting-started steps say to open the app and choose a sign-in option: an Adobe ID, Google, Facebook, Apple or an enterprise ID. Adobe adds that you need to sign in to use subscription features and the free features that rely on online services.
- A college library guide (updated September 2026): before scanning, "be sure to have an Adobe account and have the Adobe Scan app downloaded onto your mobile device."
One blog post claims scans can be saved on the phone without signing in, but no Adobe page we found says so. Our advice: assume Adobe Scan will ask you to log in.
Why does Adobe ask? Adobe Scan is built around Adobe's online document storage. The same account opens your scans in Acrobat Reader and in Acrobat on a computer, and that's useful if you already live in Adobe's tools. It's less useful when you just need to scan one form and send it. It also adds one more thing that can go wrong: in a January 2025 Adobe Community thread, an iPhone user reported a sign-in error saying their Adobe ID had no access to Adobe cloud storage.
Can you stop Adobe Scan uploading to the cloud?
Not according to Adobe's documentation. Adobe's iPhone guide says the app converts images to PDF and saves them to Adobe cloud storage, and the Android guide says that once you tap Save PDF, the scan is automatically saved there. The App Store listing says the same: scans are automatically saved to Adobe Document Cloud.
People have asked for an off switch since 2017. On Adobe's community forum, answers in 2017 and again in May 2024 describe Adobe Scan as a cloud-based app that uploads files for text recognition and storage. Adobe's FAQ even advises you not to close the app until the upload to Adobe cloud storage is complete.
What you can do in Adobe Scan:
- Copy to device, Google Drive or Dropbox to keep an extra copy outside Adobe's storage.
- Turn on Save originals to Photos in settings.
Both give you an extra copy, but according to Adobe's guides the saved PDF still goes to Adobe cloud storage. Adobe says it encrypts files in transit and at rest. If you'd still rather not have an online copy of an ID, a payslip or a medical letter, use a scanner that works on the phone.
A scanner with no sign-up: Doc Scanner
Doc Scanner is made by us, Ginowl, and it was designed so the first thing you see is a scanner, not a registration form.
- No sign-up. There's no registration form to fill in. An account is created automatically in the background, and signing in with Apple or Google is optional.
- Smart edge detection. Point the camera and Doc Scanner finds the corners, straightens the perspective and captures the page automatically. Use Batch for up to 100 pages in one PDF.
- Searchable PDFs on the free plan. Every exported PDF gets an invisible text layer.
- AI-powered text recognition on the device. Google ML Kit reads the text on your phone, works offline and uploads nothing for recognition. Copying text, the Extract Text mode and Word/TXT conversion are Premium.
- Free signatures, merge and folders. Draw your signature once and reuse it on any page; merge documents and file them in folders.
- No ads. No watermarks.
Doc Scanner is free to download and has a free plan for scanning, signing and exporting PDFs. Premium unlocks text extraction, ID card mode, password-protected PDFs and more. For the full side-by-side, see our Adobe Scan alternatives comparison.
Skipping the sign-up helps most when:
- you're helping a parent or a friend scan a form on their phone, and nobody wants to create another account;
- you're at a rental office, a school desk or a bank counter and need the PDF right now;
- the document is personal, such as an ID, a tax form or a lab result, and you'd rather not add it to another online account;
- you're on a work phone where every new account means another password to manage.
What stays on your phone
Doc Scanner is private by design. Here's what happens where:
- Scanning and image processing: on your phone. Edge detection, perspective correction, cropping and the six filters (Original, Magic Color, Grayscale, B&W, Lighten, Contrast) all run on the device.
- Text recognition: on your phone, with nothing uploaded for recognition, so it also works in airplane mode. See our offline scanner app page.
- Your library: documents and folders live in the app on your phone. You can search inside recognised text, and on iPhone your documents also appear in Spotlight search.
- Sharing: only when you choose. Tap Share and send a PDF or JPG (or a TXT file with Premium) through your phone's share sheet to Mail, Messages, the Files app, Google Drive or a printer.
Sending something sensitive? Lock the PDF with a password and AES-256 encryption before you share it (Premium). For identity documents, ID card mode puts the front and back of a card on one page (Premium), and our guides show how to scan an ID card or a passport cleanly. When Adobe Scan is still the better fit
To be fair to Adobe: if you want your scans waiting for you on a computer through Acrobat, need text recognition in languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Russian, or rely on Book mode, Business card mode or Premium tools like Magic eraser, Adobe Scan's account is part of what you're paying for. Signing in is the trade-off for those features.
If you just want to scan a document, keep it on your phone and send it, the login is a step you can skip with Doc Scanner. Comparing more apps? Our safe scanner app page explains what to check before you scan personal documents.
Switching is quick
You don't have to start over. PDFs you already saved from Adobe Scan can come with you: open one on your phone and send it to Doc Scanner with Open in on iPhone, or Share to / Open with on Android. You can also tap Import PDF or Import from Photos in the Tools tab to bring in files and photos you already have, choosing several photos at once.
From then on, new scans start in the camera: Document for single pages, Batch for stacks, ID Card for both sides of a card (Premium) and Extract Text to pull text from a page (Premium). Your Adobe account isn't affected: scans you already saved there stay in Adobe's storage, and you can still open them in Adobe Scan or Acrobat when you need them. The steps below show the whole flow.

Doc Scanner is free to download for iPhone and Android. No ads, no watermarks, no sign-up required.
