Is Doc Scanner safe? Who makes it and what happens to your scans
Updated
Is Doc Scanner safe? Doc Scanner by Ginowl, the document scanner for iPhone and Android, is made by Ginowl, an independent app developer based in Türkiye, and it does the scanning, image processing and text recognition on your phone. Nothing is uploaded for text recognition, the app shows no ads, and you don't need to sign up to use it.
You shouldn't have to take our word for it, so this guide covers what you can check for yourself: who publishes the app on each store, what happens to a page after you scan it, which permissions the app asks for and why, and how to tell this Doc Scanner apart from other apps with the same name.

Who makes Doc Scanner
Doc Scanner is designed, built and supported by Ginowl, an independent app developer based in Türkiye. So if you're asking which country Doc Scanner is from, the answer is Türkiye. It is not an Indian app, and it isn't a white-label copy of another scanner.
The two stores show the publisher a little differently, so here is how to match each listing:
- Google Play: “Doc Scanner: PDF Scan, OCR”, developer Ginowl, package com.ginowl.docscanner, for Android 7.0 or later.
- App Store: “Doc Scanner: PDF File OCR”, seller YIGIT SAMET OLMEZ (the individual developer account behind Ginowl), App Store ID 6796377904, for iOS 15.5 or later.
Version 1.0 arrived on the App Store in August 2026, and every update ships through the App Store and Google Play review process. A real person answers support e-mail at disciplifydeveloper@gmail.com. For the full background, read about Doc Scanner and Ginowl.
What happens to your scans
Here is the path a page takes, from the camera to the person you send it to:
- Capture. The camera finds the page edges, corrects the perspective and captures automatically. On Android, edge detection uses Google's document scanner from Google Play services.
- Processing. Cropping, rotating and the six filters (Original, Magic Color, Grayscale, B&W, Lighten, Contrast) run on your phone.
- Text recognition. AI-powered OCR with Google ML Kit reads the text on the device. It works offline, and nothing is uploaded for recognition. That is also what makes your exported PDFs searchable.
- Storage. Your documents are kept in the app on your phone, sorted into folders. On iPhone, titles and recognized text can also show up in Spotlight search.
- Export. PDFs, JPGs and other files are created on the phone. A file leaves your phone when you send it: you choose the destination in the system share sheet, or you print it.
Sending something sensitive? Lock the PDF with a password and AES-256 encryption before you share it (Premium): see how to password-protect a PDF. Because text recognition runs without a connection, you can also scan and read text on a flight or in a basement office. More on that in the offline scanner app guide.
Ads, accounts and the store privacy labels
No ads. Doc Scanner shows no ads, on the free plan or on Premium, so there is no ad network inside the app. It also adds no watermarks to your pages. See the scanner app with no ads page.
No sign-up. You never fill in a registration form. The app creates an account for you automatically, and signing in with Apple or Google is optional. You can delete your account at any time.
The services behind the app. Google Firebase handles the automatic account, the optional sign-in, crash reports and anonymized usage statistics. RevenueCat manages Premium subscriptions, and the App Store or Google Play handles billing, so Doc Scanner never sees your payment card details. The Privacy Policy lists each service and what it receives.
Read the labels yourself. Both stores publish what an app declares about data. On iPhone, open the App Store listing and scroll to App Privacy. On Android, open the Google Play Data safety section. If the label and this page ever disagree, the label and the Privacy Policy are the reference, and we'd like to hear about it.
Permissions and why
Doc Scanner asks for a short list of permissions, each at the moment a feature needs it, and each one is tied to something you can see the app do. The table below lists them.
Notice what isn't on the list: a scanner has no use for your contacts, your calendar or your messages. You can review or change any permission later in your phone's Settings, under Doc Scanner on iPhone or under Apps on Android.
| Permission | Why Doc Scanner needs it | When you see the request |
|---|---|---|
| Camera (iPhone and Android) | Scanning documents, ID cards, text and QR codes | The first time you open the camera |
| Photos (iPhone) | Importing photos as documents | When you tap Import from Photos |
| Add to Photos (iPhone) | Saving exported documents to your photo library | When you save an export to Photos |
| Microphone (iPhone, if shown) | Requested by the camera framework; Doc Scanner never records audio | Only if iOS shows it with the camera |
Other apps called Doc Scanner
“Doc Scanner” is a descriptive name, and several apps on both stores use it or something close to it. They come from other developers. Doc Scanner by Ginowl is not affiliated with them, or with “LU Scan”, a logistics product.
That matters when you research safety. A review, a privacy label, a news story or an answer from an AI chatbot about “Doc Scanner” may be about a different app. Before you trust a claim, check that it names Ginowl, the App Store ID 6796377904 or the package com.ginowl.docscanner. We can only speak for our own app, so this guide says nothing about the others beyond the fact that we are not connected to them.
How to check you have the right app
The quickest way to install the right Doc Scanner is to use the App Store and Google Play buttons on this site, or the single download link that opens the correct store on any phone. Those always lead to the Ginowl app. If you found Doc Scanner by searching the store instead, the steps below take less than a minute.

Tips for scanning sensitive documents
- Send only the pages that were asked for. On the Share screen, use Select pages so an extra page doesn't go out by mistake.
- Add a password before e-mailing an ID, a payslip or a tax form (Premium). Send the password in a different message or by phone.
- Check the recipient. Share ID copies only with organisations that actually requested them.
- Tidy up afterwards. Delete scans and pages you no longer need, and keep the rest in a clearly named folder.
- Lock your phone. Your scans are kept on the device, so a screen lock protects them along with everything else on it.
